Bad Gastein has many visitors in both the Summer and Winter. However, Bad Gastein is very popular throughout the Winter months due to its ski resorts. As a result of its popularity, there are now many train services that go to Bad Gastein.

The best thing about catching the train to Bad Gastein is that the train station in Bad Gastein (Bad Gastein Bahnhof) is ideally located in the town. In fact, it is right next to the Stubnerkogel ski lift, which is the main lift in Bad Gastein. Due to its location and proximity to the ski lift, several hotels and spa in Bad Gastein, it is a popular choice of transfer, with many visitors.

Not only is it convenient but it is also very cheap and the scenery is great too!

 

Getting From Salzburg To Bad Gastein 

As previously mentioned, getting from Salzburg to Bad Gastein by train could not be easier. The majority of people wanting to get to Bad Gastein by train, will usually have flown into Salzburg Airport. Unfortunately, Salzburg Airport does not have a direct rail link, so you will first need to make your way from Salzburg Airport to Salzburg Train Station.

 

Where Do You Catch The Train

The Salzburg to Bad Gastein train departs from the main train station in Salzburg (Salzburg Hbf – Hauptbahnhof). 

 

Salzburg Airport To Salzburg Hbf

Although Salzburg International Airport doesn’t have a direct rail link, getting from the airport to the main train in Salzburg is very easy.

Passengers arriving at the airport have a couple of choices in terms of transfers from the airport to the train station. The two options are:

Taxi or Public Bus. 

Taxi: Obviously, the quickest form of transfer is by taxi but this is much more expensive, especially if you are travelling alone. Taxis can be found outside the main Arrivals Terminal at the airport.

Bus: The local bus service is a great way to get from Salzburg Airport to the train station. The Salzburg Airport bus departs from outside the main terminal building, in front of the car hire offices. Simply exit the main Arrivals Hall and just straight ahead, you will see the bus stops across the car park.

The bus service is bus number 2 and it departs from the airport every 15-20 minutes throughout the day and night. You can purchase your ticket either from the machine at the bus stop or you can pay the driver, when you get on the bus. The journey takes approximately 20-25 minutes, depending on traffic.

The bus then drops you off right outside the main train station in Salzburg. Simply get off the bus and make your way across to the train station.

Do You Need To Change Trains

There are both direct trains and in-direct train services that run from Salzburg to Bad Gastein. The direct trains depart from Salzburg every 2 hours throughout the day and night.

The in-direct trains run much more frequent but require changing trains at either one or two stations. 

The direct trains are much quicker and a lot let hassle, especially if you are travelling with ski/snowboard bags!

 

How Long Is The Journey Time From Salzburg To Bad Gastein

The fastest journey time from Salzburg to Bad Gastein is approximately 1 hour 29 minutes. However, other direct services can take 1 hour 50 minutes. The distance by train from Salzburg to Bad Gastein is approximately 48 miles (77 kilometers).

 

Tickets:

One of the cheapest ways to purchase your train tickets from Salzburg to Bad Gastein is to book them in advance. Booking in advance can provide you with great savings. You can purchase your tickets at the train station either from the machines or in the OBB office.

 

Price:

As you can appreciate, tickets prices are subject to change but the current price of a ticket for the Salzburg to Bad Gastein train is approximately £15 (17 euros) one way.

 

Trains:

One of the main service providers for trains to Bad Gastein from Salzburg is OBB (Railjet). The trains are very reliable and generally run on time. The trains have a range of facilities to make your journey more comfortable, as well different types of classes.
