Girona Airport Guide
Girona Airport (GRO) is approximately 90 klm (55 miles) North East of Barcelona and has now become a perfect low cost gateway to the Costa Brava. The airport has become more popular over the last few years due to the many low cost airlines that now service the airport and has also become a cheap alternative for travellers wanting to reach the city of Barcelona. Since the airport opened in 1967, it has seen a steady growth in passenger traffic and now has over 3 million passengers passing through it each year.
Due to its strategic location in the centre of the Girona Province, the airport is also an ideal destination for travellers wishing to take a longer more relaxing holiday in one of the coastal resorts on the Costa Brava such as: Tossa de Mar & Lloret de Mar or skiing breaks in the Pyrenees or French Alps. Girona airport is only 100klms (62 miles) from the historic city of Perpignan, which also makes the airport a popular choice for passengers wishing to explore the city.
Although many of the low cost airlines advertise Girona airport or ‘Gerona’ airport as ‘Barcelona’, it is in fact approximately 90 klms from Barcelona itself and it takes at least 1hr 20 mins to get to Barcelona by bus. However, due to the fact that many of the low cost airlines do advertise the airport as ‘Girona Barcelona Airport’, there are several transfer options in place that make reach Barcelona from Girona airport very easy and cheap.
The historic Medieval city of Girona is only 20-25 minutes away from the airport and is well worth a visit if you have a few hours spare. The old Medieval city and its wonderful buildings, architecture and ancient streets will allow you to explore for hours and then enjoy a well deserved drink in one of the many charming cafe bars that line the streets.

You can take a taxi from the airport to the centre of Barcelona and it will probably cost you 150 euros each way. So, a round trip can be somewhere in the region of 300 euros (an expensive trip!).
