Dortmund Airport Information Guide

Dortmund Airport (DTM) is situated just 10 Klms (6 miles) East of Dortmund itself.  Due to it’s location on the Eastern side of the Ruhr industrial area, the airport has quick and easy access to A40 and A44 motorways, providing a great gateway to the North Rhine and Westfalia regions of Germany.

The airport is now often referred to as ‘Dortmund Airport 21’, this is because one of the major shareholders in the airport is a company called DWS21.  The airport has seen steady growth in the past few years, largely due to the low cost airline that now service the airport.  A large number of airlines service the airport and offer flights to over 40 destinations worldwide.

Over 1.2 million passengers now pass through the airport each year on both domestic and International flights. The airport only has one terminal with three floors, the arrivals being on the ground floor, departures on level 1 and other airport facilities for passengers on level 2.

A shuttle bus (airport Express) operates from the airport and provides a regular service for passengers wishing to travel to the centre of Dormund itself.  The price for the shuttle is 6 euros for an adult, 2 euros for children over the age of 6 and infants under 6 years of age travel FREE. (These prices were correct at the time of writing).  The journey takes about 30 minutes from the airport to the main station in Dortmund.  Passengers can catch the shuttle, airport Express, and other public buses from outside the departures entrance of the airport terminal.

Although the airport does not have a direct rail link into the airport itself, it does have a train station very close by.  The nearest train station to Dortmund airport is Holzwickede and there is a regular bus service that links passengers to Holzwickede train station and Dortmund airport.  The buses run every 15-20 minutes and the journey only takes about 5 minutes. Dortmund Airport Arrivals

At the bottom of this page, you can keep up to date with all the latest flight Arrivals information for Dortmund airport. Flight arrivals can change and using the widget below will help you stay informed.

Dortmund Airport Arrivals Procedures

Upon landing at the airport your aircraft will taxi to the parking bay to which it has been allocated. Once the aircraft has come to a complete stand still, the Ground Staff at the airport will attach the stairs or walkway to the aircraft so that passengers can disembark safely. Once you have disembarked the aircraft, you will then need to make your way to the main terminal building. both the airline staff and Ground staff will be there to ensure your transition from the aircraft to the airline is safe. If you require assistance from the aircraft to the terminal building, it is advisable to contact your airline or the airport before you travel to ensure there will be someone there to meet you from your flight with all the correct requirements.

Just like any other International airport, you will be required to undergo all the normal procedure at Dortmund airport arrivals. You will first need to clear Security and Passport Control once you enter the airport terminal. At Passport Control, you will be required to present a valid passport and any other relevant documents required for your travel.  It is always advisable to check before you travel, that you have all the required documents.

Baggage Reclaim At Dortmund Airport Arrivals

Once you have successfully cleared Passport Control, you will need to make your way to the Baggage Reclaim area (unless you are traveling without any hold luggage). The Baggage Reclaim area is where you will collect any items of luggage you may have check-in for your flight to Dortmund Airport. In the baggage reclaims area there are several carousels and each flight arrival at Dortmund airport is allocated a carousel to which its ‘Hold Luggage’ will be processed on. Above each carousel in the Baggage Reclaim area is an overhead monitor and each of these overhead monitors displays the flight number and flight origin to which it is processing. You will need to allocate the carousel that is processing your flight and the easiest way to do this is simply look at the monitors overhead. When you have found out which carousel you luggage will be on, simply stand by it and wait for your luggage to appear. After reclaiming your luggage, you can make your way to the arrivals exit.

The process of reclaiming your luggage is generally a quick process and the Ground staff at the airport work hard to ensure you receive your luggage as soon as possible. This process can take a little longer at peak times when there are several flights arriving around the same time.

Luggage trolleys are available in the Baggage Reclaim and Arrivals area to assist you with your luggage and there is a 1 euro charge for the trolleys.

Obviously, as I mentioned earlier, if you are only travelling with hand luggage and have no checked-in luggage to collect you can bypass the Baggage Reclaim and make your way straight to the exit doors.

In the main arrivals exit area lobby, you will find all the various forms of transport for your transfer to and from the airport and to your final destination. This area is where most passengers will be greeted if they are being collected by family or friends. If you have pre-booked your transfer to and from the airport or if you have booked a package holiday which has transfer included, this is normally where you will be collected by your representative, unless stated otherwise by the company you arranged your transfer with. It is always a good idea to confirm with your transfer or tour company where you will be greeted before you travel.

The main arrivals area at Dortmund Airport, is also where you will find the several car hire companies that are located inside the Arrivals terminal building and if you have already booked your car, this is where you will need to go. If you have pre-booked your car hire in advance (which is always the best idea), you will need to make your way to the car hire company desk that you booked your car hire with. You will also need to ensure you have all the relevant documents with you to allow you to complete your booking. These documents usually include driving licence, credit card, booking for/reference or booking voucher. You will then be issued with your vehicle and keys and shown where your car is parked.

Outside the main Arrivals area is also where the coach services and local bus services operate from. You can catch public transport to various towns and cities near Dortmund and if you need any further information about these services, a member of staff at the airport will be more than happy to provide you with the correct details.

Taxis

Taxis can be found outside the Main Arrivals terminal at the airport and if you are wanting to take a taxi to your final destination, it is advisable to ask how much the fare will be.

There are several other facilities in the main Arrivals area lobby of the airport that passengers are available to passengers. The following facilities are available:
