Where Is Alhama de Granada:
Alhama de Granada is located approximately 58 kilometers (36 miles) from the famous city of Granada and 68 miles (109 kilometers) from Malaga. Due to its close proximity to Granada, day trips to the Medieval spa town of Alhama de Granada are a popular choice with many tourists.
The town itself it set on top of the Los Tajos limestone gorge, which offers stunning views across the gorge and flowing valley.
History Of Alhama de Granada:
The history of Alhama de Granada dates back many centuries to prehistoric times. As a result, this small spa town is rich in history. However, the town started gaining its real importance for its thermal waters, during the Roman period. During this period, the Romans began building many different structures in the town. These structures included baths and bridges, as well as buildings with beautiful architecture. In fact, many of these structures are still visible in the town itself today. As a result, they all contribute to the many attractions of Alhama de Granada.
The word ‘Alhama’ is originally derived from the Arabic term ‘al-hammam’ which means ‘Hot Springs or Hot Baths’. This is now obviously a reference to the famous thermal springs of Alhama de Granada.
711:
In 711 AD, the town came under Muslim rule and this was a result of the invasion of Spain by the Moors. Due to the Moorish invasion of Spain, Alhama de Granada was further developed. As a result of this development, the town grew its reputation as a spa destination. One of the most significant remnants of this development is the Arab Baths or ‘Los Baños Arabes’.
1482:
1482 saw another significant change in the town of Alhama de Granada. This change was during the Reconquista (the Christian re-conquest of Spain). During this time, the town was captured by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. As a result of this capture, it marked the turning point in the war against the Moors.
The centuries that followed, certainly saw the town flourish under Christian rule. In fact, during the 16th and 17th centuries, several new churches and convents were built. One of the largest and most visible churches to be built during this period was the ‘Iglesia Mayor de Santa María de la Encarnación’ or ‘the Great Church of Saint Mary of the Incarnation’, as it is also know. One of the best known convent to be built was the Carmen Convent.
Today:
Today, both the church and convent play a prominent part in the town. Both iconic structures provide an insight into the history of Alhama de Granada, as well as displaying the beautiful architecture of the time.
However, more recently, the history of Alhama de Granada has become known for its spectacular Holy Week processions during the Easter celebration. It is also known for its annual carnival.
Alhama De Granada Hot Springs:
As we have previously mentioned, one of the things that the town is famous for is its hot springs. The waters of the hot springs are believed to have therapeutic properties, which are said to help many different health issues and ailments. These include:

Los Baños Arabes: Los Baños Arabes are unfortunately no longer in use but date back to when Spain was under Moorish rule. Although they are no longer in use, you can still visit the historical site and explore the remains.

Alhama Canyon and Gorges:
It is without doubt that one of the most impressive attractions of Alhama is the gorge. The town itself, sits high on the top of the gorge, overlooking the vast river bottom. From the top, you can see for miles over the mountain ranges and flowing canyon.
Arab Baths (Los Baños Arabes):
We have mentioned several times the Arab Baths (Los Baños Arabes) and their significance to the town. Dating back many centuries, the Arab baths once provided treatments to visitors using the thermal waters. Today, the Arab Baths can be seen via the spa but only at set times during the week.
Castle:
Built on the former Arab Alcazaba the distinct red building is certainly an iconic structure.
Church of Ntra. Sra. Santa María de la Encarnación:
The Church of Ntra. Sra. Santa María de la Encarnación (the Great Church of Saint Mary of the Incarnation) is the dominant church in the town. The Catholic church dates back to the 16th Century and is now one of the main attractions in the town.
The Natural Hot Pool:
Although the modern spa of ‘Balneario’ is a paid entry, the natural hot pool is free! The natural hot pool enjoys thermal waters that reach temperatures of over 40 degrees. The Natural hot pool is a popular attraction with both locals and tourists during the Summer months. The pool itself is not very big and as a result, can become a little busy during these times. However, it is a great experience to bathe in the pool and relax in the hot thermal waters.
Hotels And Accommodation:
Although the town itself is not large in size, there are several different types of accommodation available. The good news is that there is accommodation to suit all needs, requirements and budgets. Whether you are looking for a basic guest house or hotel, there is something for you.
Guest houses are a popular choice in the town, as they provide their a unique charm and character. However, the larger hotels also provide guests with more facilities including spa, swimming pool and restaurants.
The price of accommodation does fluctuate and the price you pay will be determined by several different factors. These factors include:
